The Shetland pony is the eldest and smallest pony breed in the world. Its origins lay in the Shetland Islands. The Shetland Islands are situated 200 km north of Scotland, where the North Sea and the Atlantic Ocean come together. It’s a rough area which, because of its harsh climate, does not have a lot of vegetation. For ages, Shetland ponies have been living in this climate. They are very strong ponies that are known for their lush coat. Several centuries ago the ponies were already brought to the mainland as working ponies. Because Shetland ponies do not need a lot of taking care off and because they are awfully strong, they turned out to be excellent helps in mining, in working on the land or just as transporting goods/loads. The Shetland pony can be found in the following sizes: Mini to 87 cm Small 87-92 cm Medium 93-98 cm Large 99-107 cm The ponies have a very gentle character and that is why they are very well fit to be kept as ponies for children. They can be a little pig-headed sometimes, but luckily children seem to like this. Unfortunately a lot of ponies are bought abroad and are sold again in Poland as being Shetland ponies. Very often they’re biting and kicking ponies, thus giving Shetland ponies a bad name. You can rest assure; a well raised Shetland pony is absolutely not a biter nor a kicker. If you are ever thinking about buying a Shetland pony be sure to inform the only official studbook in Poland; PKSKS.
